EDITOR'S NOTE
A DRESS
While taping the TV show How to Look Good Naked Canada (Fear not: I kept my clothes on), I was asked "Why should every woman own a sexy dress?" My mind immediately jumped to one of those bandage numbers from Azzedine Alaia or Herve I.eger, worn with sky-high stilettos and big bedroom hair, and the women—like Stephanie Seymour and Gisele Biindchen—who rule this look. Trouble is, there's no point in wearing this stuff if you're not already a hot tamale because these clothes wiil only highlight the gap between the mouseburger and the mighty amazon.
Back in the day ('80s), I suppose you could say that I was a "quirky hot tamale." My closet was crammed with fishnet stockings, stilettos, sheer blouses, catsuits and rubber hot pants. Unsurprisingly, I went out on a lot of dates. Somewhere along the way (late '90s), I took another fashion path. The last piece of my youthful "ta ma I en ess" to go was the lime-green rubber hot pants; I simply couldn't imagine one upcoming social engagement that would require this kind of attire. It was a wistful day.
Today, the rubber shorts and sheer tops have been replaced by Italian-cashmere sweaters and drapey wool-jersey slacks. Still hot—that is, if you happen to be in an overheated room or the throes of a hormonal flux. Yet no fashion regrets—in either case.
Dressing "sexy" is a state of mind. Sure, there are certain classics guaranteed to stimulate the endocrine system, such as red lipstick, the stiletto and the short dress. These all say "Hiya, sailor!" But if conventional expressions of female sexuality are not your thing, then create your own. There's no point in wearing a pair of vertiginous Choos to attract a guy only to let him down when he spies your extended collection of Crocs.
Alber Elbaz, that lovely chubby designer at Lanvin, says that a reaction to a great dress is visceral: "I don't believe that fashion should be intellectual. There is nothing intellectual about a roast chicken; it simply makes your mouth water. And so should a dress, A woman once told me that every time she wears Lanvin, a man falls in love with her."
So, you can keep your hootchie dresses. This Valentine's Day, I'm wrapping myself in cashmere and cooking a nice roast-chicken dinner—a deux.

E L L E LETTERS
This months bos I
I have always hopped from hairstylist Jo hairstylist, so I really enjoyed reading "Head Case" [ELLE Diary, December 2009]. I truly envied the writer; I could never imagine having a go-to stylist, let alone one that I was faithful to for a decade. My longest relationship was two years and abruptly ended when I graduated from university. I wanted us to stay together, but when I tried to schedule an appointment months later, I learned that my beloved hairdresser had packed up his scissors and moved to another city! So now I'm picking up the pieces and starting my search again. Thanks for an entertaining article. EMILY, EMAIL
Ugly truth
I was extreme!у frustrated when I read the question "Is Ugly the New Pretty?" on the cover of your magazine [November 2009J. After reading the article ["Perfect Storm," elle Fashion], I was incensed. It isn't going to make "ugly" people feel any more beautiful to say "ugly is cool," especially when the rest of your magazine embraces white models with 110 curves or blemishes to speak of. (That includes the model who was featured in the article.) And, instead of suggesting that imperfections are being embraced, why not use the word "diversity"? Diversity is a beautiful thing—ELLE Canada should realize that.
SARAH, NEW WESTMINSTER, RC.
Room service
Your article about The Room at the Bay ["Baywatch," ELLE Style, November 2009] made me smile. I have a photo of my mother from 1977 on her way to an event. She'd had her makeup done at the F.stee Lauder couHten, and the new dress she wore was from The Room. (She had bought it in three different shades!) The vision you describe of the store has me thinking that maybe I should stop by with my 86-year-old mother to see what the new Room has to offer.
USA CAULEY, GUELPH, ONT.
Loyal flush
It drives me insane when I read things like "We Love Marc Jacobs" on ELLE Canada's cover. As a Canadian magazine, how about "We Love Joe Fresh Style" or "We Love Le Chateau"? In other words, let's highlight Canadian brands.
CRISTIANOTEIXEIRA, CALGARY
Block mark
Your article "Cood Ink" [ELLE Diary, October 2009] should be viewed as a cautionary tale at best and misinformed at worst. F.ven thinking of getting a tattoo without being sure of your design and researching a great artist and a clean and sterile shop is a recipe for disaster, The author's comments were shocking: Scrubbing a fresh tattoo with a Brillo pad may cause an infection, and black ink has not contained metal fragments for 20 years, so having an MRI is not an issue if a tattoo has been done recently. (My arms are almost fully tattooed, and I have had several MRIs without incident.)
Your article was filled with cliches when it should have explored how things have progressed since the author was tattooed.
KIM NOWAK, COQUITLAM, B.C.
Seeing red
Your October 2009 issue was another stellar one. I especially loved the shoot in Coco Chanel's apartment ["Oh So Coco," ELLE Fashion], Model Elise Gatschene and her red hair were stunning. I have two adorable redheads in my life: my husband and my daughter. Vive la Frame and le rouge!
KIM MAYBERRY, BANFF, ALTA,
