My country house (left), in the tiny village of Athens, New York, came with a sprawling side porch, gorgeous old peonies, and the warmest, most generous neighbors imaginable.
"My husband and I became connected— to the land, the seasons, the community.'
Finding My Way Home
How an old house in the countnigave me a new outlook on, well, everything
My life changed forever on October 13, 2006. That's the day my husband and I closed on our first home, a Victorian charmer in New York's Hudson Valley, After some 15 years cooped up in teensy Manhattan apartments, Tony and I ran around our new old country house like two kids on Christmas morning (albeit two kids swilling Cabernet from plastic cups). There's an upstairs! A porch! A yard! A freakin' barn! Ooh. darlin', we have a linen closet, an honest-to-goodness linen closet—you know, for extra towels and sheets and stuff!
Of course, mere square feet, even 3,000 of'em, didn't make the difference: nor were we transformed overnight. It took spring for Tony and me to discover the peonies and lilacs planted by previous owners—and a couple of years before we started coaxing heirloom tomatoes from seed. Slowly, we got to know our local farm store, drive-in theater, auction house, and bighearted neighbors. We hosted dinner parties, whiled away Saturdays at the creek, joined forces with like-minded preservationists. In short, Tony and I became connected—to the land, the seasons, the community. Even our bonds with longtime city friends grew stronger, as a few hours of chitchat in the latest downtown restaurant gave way to whole weekends' worth of genuine conversation over pajama-elad breakfasts and late-night marshmallow roasts.
So, yeah, I believe in the power of place—something I have in common with the folks in this issue. Alicia Zalka (page 84) threw her home a birthday party, complete with a cake modeled after the Federal structure. When Galen and Nellie Criqui found 178 acres on which to build a house, they also found a way to build memories, of frog hunts and tractor rides, for their children {page 102). And Teresa Dejarlais renovated more than the Buffalo, Minnesota, post office featured on page 114; she renovated her career, too. I understand. Though I may not have grasped it four years ago, I now realize that I wasn't just buying a dreamy getaway in the country, I was preparing for my dream job—editing this magazine, about all the things that really matter.

Dear Country Living...
COUNTRY LTVIMG
1SS bright
holiday ideas
Johnette Howard's Christmas memories ["TheJoy of.. page 94] brought a smile to my face. Her essay reminded me of the tiny tree I once decorated in my dorm room, with homemade ornaments crafted by my unskilled but eager fingers. I placed a star from my childhood on top, and my son now puts that same star on his little tree, which he proudly purchased with his own money for his room. —Lori Hoffman, Marker Heights, Texas
I was completely perplexed about what to give my son's teacher this yeai^-until I spotted your recipe for golden honey granola ["Delicious Gifts," page 6 A]. It made my house smell amazing, and the granola almost didn't end up at school, because I couldn't stop snacking!
I.eslee Stewart Tampa Bay, Florida
Reading about vintage cocktail picks in your December/January issue ["Take Your Pick," page 71] made me think of my dad. He's collected barware for years, but T never thought it was worth much. Boy, was I shocked to discover that his silver set by the Napier company is valued at $175!
Barbara Duncan Catoosa, Oklahoma
I was disappointed not to see a single mention of charitable opportunities in your December/ January issue. I enjoy gifts and celebrations, too, hut the day I can afford superfluous spending is the day I know I'm not doing enough to feed, clothe, and shelter those who are suffering in my community.
Crysfa/ Dobson Minneapolis
I loved seeing the beautiful etsy •com ornaments in "Branching Out" [page 60]. Being handmade makes them even more special.
Carol Anthes Auburn, California
Jenn Playford's idea for using a thrift-store shirt to wrap gifts in "Wrap Stars" [page 88] was adorable. Thanks, Country Living, for making the smallest things in life exciting.
Kate Prince Princeton, Kentucky
I really appreciate that you encouraged readers to buy from their downtown shops ["Save Main Street," page 23]. I try to give as much business as possible to local merchants and find it far more pleasurable than shopping at superstores.
Lavanne Ritenaur Xenia, Ohio
