MY FAVOURITE ORGANIZING HELPERS RIGHT NOW
Order in the House
Remember when everybody carried Filofaxes and Day-Timers everywhere they went? Mine was the size of a school binder in black leather with contrasting white stitching. I filled it with a carefully selected array of inserts and dividers. By the end of the year, it had doubled in thickness. I stashed everything you could imagine in it: invitations, memos, Post-it notes, workout schedules, meal plans, photos, stamps ... you name it. You could tell a lot about a person by what they had in their Filofax!
While the computer is clearly more efficient, and saves trees, I sometimes miss my old Filofax. Not the lugging it around part (let's face it — it was like dropping a brick into your bag), but how tangible it was. Every January, one of my favourite things to do was add new inserts and fill in the new address pages. When I was done, I felt totally organized. I also liked how I could look back and see everything I'd accomplished that year. It was so much more meaningful than my computer's iCal will ever be. In this digital age, when technology is so seamless, we sometimes overlook the value of this sort of everyday tactile experience.
This is why, although it may sound like a chore, getting your house organized can actually be fun. It's a chance to get your hands into something and make things work better. The day I purge and reorganize my closet feels like a fresh start. And I get so excited putting away the dishes and glasses in new kitchen drawer dividers, knowing that it will make cooking so much easier.
That's why we make sure our annual "Organizing" issue is filled with great ideas to help you create order in your own home. From our "One Chic Loft, 25 Great Ideas" story (page 50), which offers up surprise storage solutions for open-concept spaces, to our bedroom makeover (page 46), we've included loads of easy clutter cures for you to try. I'd love to hear what works for you, so please let us in on your best organizing tricks (write letters@hhmedia.com or visit houseandhome.com/contact).

HOW DO YOU CONQUER CLUTTER?
N "With two young children, baskets are my go-to solution. It's amazing what you can hide away on a moment's notice." MOST TALKED ABOUT...
We had so many letters from people over the moon for Victoria Webster's Hollywood glam house ("Renegade Regency," Jan. 2010), plus a few who dissed it.
I've never seen a Toronto home that shows as much pluck and wit as Victoria Webster's when it comes to embracing a truly bold design aesthetic. I don't have the chutzpah to do this in my home, but I applaud her for sticking with her vision and bringing it to fruition so readers like me can enjoy it on your pages.
